The John Curtin Gallery would like to forewarn all viewing this webpage that it features the works and names of artists who are now deceased.
The John Curtin Gallery proudly presents an exhibition of recently rediscovered artworks created between 1945 and 1951 by Aboriginal children from the Stolen Generations at the Carrolup Native Settlement in Western Australia’s Great Southern region.
The Herbert Mayer Collection of Carrolup Artwork was formally transferred to Curtin University from Colgate University, New York in May 2013. This followed negotiations between Colgate, Curtin, senior elders of the Noongar community in the Great Southern region and the Mungart Boodja Art Centre.
Koolark Koort Koorliny (Heart Coming Home) – The Herbert Mayer Collection of Carrolup Artwork, celebrates the return to Western Australia of these extraordinary works, created as part of an inspired teaching program devised to alleviate the suffering of Aboriginal children forcibly removed from their parents and incarcerated at Carrolup in accordance with the Government’s policy of assimilation in the late 1940s.
